Dell Latitude D600 Intel P-4 (1.60GHz, 2MB cache), 512MB, 40 gb hard drive, DVD-ROM , 14.1 TFT LCD; ATI® MOBILITYTM RADEONTM 9000; 56K1 v.92 internal modem, 10/100/10002 Ethernet LAN, Wireless (802.11b/g) MiniPCI; Wi-Fi compatible (standard), Microsoft® Windows XP
The Dell Latitude D600 laptop has not gotten a great deal of good comments by the consumers who purchased it. It is a lightweight and slim machine that will provide the light computer users with a great deal of versatility. However, when you consider the problems that have been found on this machine it might be wise to do some research.
The keyboard is large and comfortable for typing. It offers the user two different methods for using the mouse. You can choose between the touch pad and the pointing stick in the center of the keyboard. This is good for users who find using one or the other difficult and gives some choice.
If you don't experience any of the problems that other users have found with the D600 series of laptops, it is a quick and responsive laptop. It will get the job done for light computer users but might pose some problems for those who do keyboard intensive work on their laptop. The problems that have been experienced the most by users of this laptop is the flimsy quality of the keys and keyboard. The keys alternate between sticking or breaking off the keyboard altogether. In fact, it has been reported that Dell has a great deal of replacement parts for this machine because of the problems that it has had. A new keyboard might not provide a solution for very long, as the replacements have been proving to be equally flimsy.
This machine has also gotten a great deal of negative feedback about the overheating problem that it seems to have on the left side of the machine. Again, if you are a heavy computer user this will present a problem. It has also reported a problem with the mouse behaving erratically even when it is not in use. The cursor has a tendency to move about the screen which would make it difficult if you were working on a document.
The addition of the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics card is a welcome addition for those who use their laptop for gaming. All in all, the problems outweigh the possible benefits of this laptop and you would be advised to continue the search for a quality laptop for your money.
